Elongate; snout large, conical, projects beyond mouth; no barbels or pores on chin; edge of preopercle smooth; eye small; mouth large, slightly oblique, ends under eye; teeth in broad bands, outer teeth on top jaw enlarged and spaced out, slightly enlarged teeth mixed with small ones on lower jaw; 19-23 short rakers on first gill arch; dorsal fin X-XI, 21-24, 4th spine longest, soft dorsal with slightly convex border; anal with short base, concave rear edge, II,9-10, 2nd spine + 1/2 length 1st ray; pectoral fin long, reaches past tip of pelvic, 18-19 rays; tail slightly concave, pointed tips; scales rough, relatively large, 57-62 in lateral series, 5-6 rows between lateral line and dorsal origin.

Blue grey above, darkest on top of head and nape, shading to silvery on belly and throat; may have dark streaks along scale rows; dorsal, tail, anal fins dark grey; pectoral fins and base dark grey, axil black; pelvics whitish; rear margin of operculum above pectoral base blackish.

Size: 49 cm.

Habitat: soft bottoms.

Depth: 5-50 m?.

Ecuador to Chile.
