SCORPAENA

SCORPIONFISHES

Head very bony, with numerous spines, pit usually present behind eye; lateral line with tubes on scales; dorsal XII,7-10; anal III,5; scales rough or smooth; pectoral 15-16 rays, upper rays branched in adult; roof of mouth with teeth on sides but not at front; no slit behind last gill arch.

A tropical to warm temperate worldwide genus with about 51 species, occurs in the Atlantic and Indo-west Pacific as well as the eastern Pacific, where it is represented by 6 endemic species, 5 of which occur in our region.
