Tiger reef eel, Tiger moray

Body very elongate, cylindrical, semi-rigid; tail very short (29-37% of total length), with blunt, skin-covered tip; dorsal & anal fins barely visible, near tip of tail; head & snout short; eye small; front and rear nostrils short tubes; mouth long; teeth conical, sharp, in 2 rows along jaws, in 5 rows at front between top jaws, 1 row of 4-5 teeth on roof of mouth.

Ground color of body pale yellowish grey; body, tail & rear of head densely marked with dark blotches and spots of varying sizes; front of head, snout & jaws with dense small dark spots and dots; nostrils dark.

Size: 140 cm.

Habitat: rocky and rubble bottoms at reefs.

Depth: 5-25 m.

Indo-Pacific; resident in our region; the SW Gulf of California, and Jalisco (Mexico) to Colombia, Clipperton, the Revillagigedos and Cocos.
