Overview
Main identification features
  • black diagonal bar: nape to eye
  • dorsal fin and a: long lobes
Snout long; pointed; deeper body and with taller dorsal and anal fins than other Seriola in the region; dorsal rays VII+I,27-33; anal rays II (reduced or embedded in large fish) + I,18-22; total gill rakers on first arch (excluding rudiments) 22-26; lateral line with slight arch over pectoral region; no scutes; grooves present on dorsal and ventral surface of caudal fin base, but no lateral fleshy keel.

Bluish to greenish on upper back, silvery below; oblique dark band from snout to front of dorsal fin; juveniles (up to 20cm) with 6 dark bars on side.

Size: attains at least 157 cm, common to 60 cm; at least 60kg.

Habitat: demersal and pelagic, mainly oceanic.

Depth: 3-250 m.

Circumtropical, in the eastern Pacific from Southern California to the SW Gulf of California to Peru, and the oceanic islands.
