Elongate, compressed; mouth large, slightly oblique, lower jaw projects a little; jaw teeth pointed, in 1-2 rows, without large canines; 2 pores on chin, no barbel; preopercle border smooth; 25-27 long, thin rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal IX-X, 18-21, spiny part short base, separated from soft part by large gap; anal base long, II,21-23, spines short, thin; pectorals short, 15-17 rays; tail emarginate; scales rough on body, smooth on head; 59-64 lateral line scales; soft dorsal and anal entirely scaled.

Blue grey to tan upper body; belly bright silver; sides with dark lines along scale rows; pectoral dark, darker inner base; other fins yellowish.

Size: 30.5 cm.

Habitat: sandy bottoms, bays and tidal lagoons.

Depth: 0-181 m.

Oregon to the tip of Baja California.
