SERRANOS
With 9-23 rakers on 1st gill arch; preopercle regularly serrated, no spur with enlarged spines; dorsal X,11-15; scales rough, relatively large, 50-75 in lateral series; pelvics inserted before pectoral base; tail with rounded to straight edge.
A tropical to temperate genus of 25 species, occurs on both sides of the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the western Indian Ocean as well as our region; represented here by 5 endemics.
