Preopercle regularly serrated; pelvics inserted before pectoral base; mouth large, oblique, lower jaw projecting, mouth ends almost under middle of eye; preopercle margin barely convex; 12-13 rakers on lower arm of 1st gill arch; dorsal X, 12, spines increase rapidly in length to 4th then decrease; anal III,7, 2nd spine a little longer than 3rd; pectoral reaching nearly to anus; tail concave; scales rough, relatively large, 48 lateral scales.

Head, body, and dorsal, tail, anal and pelvic very dark grey-brown; tail with a white bar in center; iris yellow-brown; ~5 pale blotches along upper back; pale yellow elongate blotch behind pectoral, shading into a silvery band; a purple blotch above anus.

Size: 20 cm.

Habitat: rocky bottoms.

Depth: 80-200 m?.

The tip of Baja and the central Gulf of California to Peru.
