Overview
Main identification features
  • front: red-brown
  • body: ~8 red and yellow bars
  • double stripe: snout and eye
Dorsal rays X,12; anal rays III,7; pectoral rays 16; lateral-line scales 47-50; body depth 3.6-3.7 in standard length.

Head bluish brown with pair of red-orange stripes on snout and behind eye; about eight bars on side of body, these red on upper half and bright yellow below; bars may coalesce to form more or less solid red area, in which case the yellow portions have the appearance of a row of vertically elongate rectangular blotches; a whitish bar across tail base; base of caudal fin red.

Size: grows to at least 8.5 cm.

Inhabits sand-rubble fringe of reefs.

Depth: 10-35 m.

Cocos and Malpelo Islands.
