Overview
Main identification features
  • narrow and concave between eyes
  • 2 black skin flaps midback
  • skin flaps on body
  • row dark blotches lower flank
Dorsal rays 8; anal rays 6; body moderately elongate, the depth about 3.0-3.5 in standard length; narrow and concave between eyes; small prickles covering most of body; small triangular flaps of skin (cirri) scattered along side.

Olive on back and upper sides with brownish mottlings and numerous small white spots, ventral parts white; a horizontal row of brown blotches or short bars between dark upper part of body and white lower part.

Size: reaches at least 30 cm.

Inhabits sandy or weedy areas. Has an effective camouflage coloration and is therefore difficult to detect on weed or rubble bottoms. Juveniles occur on deep mud bottoms.

Depth: 1-107 m.

Southern California to the lower 3/4 of the Gulf of California to Chile, including Galapagos, Revillagigedos, Cocos and Malpelo.
