Body oblong, thick; head relatively long and slender; wide and convex between eyes; nasal organ a short papilla with 2 small holes at end; skin spines over almost entire body and head, including snout to before nostrils, and tail base; no skin flaps; dorsal 8, anal 7, pectoral 14-15; tail straight.

Dark olive brown above, paler below; dark spots above eye and on flank behind pectoral; indistinct pale lines on upper surface: 1 between front borders of eyes, 1 between rear borders of eyes, 1 angling down along back above pectorals and joining a short line from dorsal origin, sometimes lines behind dorsal, an oval in center of back; dorsal fin with dark base; inner 1/3 of tail olive, outer 2/3 black, margin pale; anal clear; pectoral clear, narrow dark bar at base.

Size: 17 cm.

Habitat: demersal on shallow soft bottoms.

Depth: 5-118 m.

The tip of Baj and the Gulf of California to Peru.
