Elongate, cylindrical; long head, pointed snout; mouth large, horizontal, lower jaw longer; jaws and roof of mouth with large, pointed teeth; lateral line complete, straight; origin of pelvic fins well behind pectoral fins, under first dorsal fin; pectoral fin short (26-29% of head length) 16 rays; scales smooth, 166 on lateral line; tail fin forked, without central lobes; dorsal V + I, 8-10; anal II, 8-10 rays; pectoral 16 rays; pelvic 5 rays.

Color Brownish to bluish above, sometimes with faint oblique bars on back, silvery below; lateral line dark; fins with grey rays and yellowish membranes.

Size: 157 cm.

Habitat: coastal and oceanic, nearbottom to surface.

Depth: 0-38 m.

California to the tip of Baja, the SW Gulf of California and the Revillagigedos Islands.
