Dorsal rays V + I, 9; anal rays II, 8; pelvic origin under tip of pectoral and before dorsal fin origin; lateral-line scales about 108-116; body elongate, the depth about 8.0-9.0 in standard length; eye 6.0-7.0 in head length; canine teeth on lower jaw, roof of mouth, and inner row at front of top jaw very large.

Generally silvery with series of chevron-shaped bars on upper two-thirds of side; tail grey.

Size: grows to about 137 cm.

Habitat: coastal pelagic.

Depth: 0-25 m.

Southern California to the SW and central eastern Gulf of California to Peru, and Malpelo.
