Main identification features
  • rear body: 2 rows dark spots
  • lips: 2 pair bars
Dorsal rays XX to XXII, 8-9; anal rays II, 16-19; total (right and left) pectoral rays 25-28 (usually 26); lateral-line scales 38-42; all of lateral line with tubes; a short, unbranched cirrus on each nostril, above eye, and on each side of nape; teeth of jaws conical, curved, and pointed; roof of mouth with teeth only at front; first anal spine of males separate from anal fin and modified as an intromittent organ; tip of male genital papilla not extending beyond fleshy tip of second anal spine.

Yellowish to reddish brown with scattered white flecks on side, usually diffuse brown bars on side and 4-5 small dark spots on posterior half of body just above middle of side; lips with 2 pair of dark bars.

Size: attains 4.5 cm.

Inhabits rocky, weed-covered reefs.

Depth: 1-25 m.

Galapagos Islands.
