Click on image to enlarge. © Copyright Gerald Allen, 2006 · 0 Stegastes flavilatus 2 thumbnails  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features light grey-brown ends dorsal and anal fins tail fin and pelvics yellowish juvenile:yellow + back and dorsal fin blue or brown Dorsal rays XII, 14 (rarely 15); anal rays II, 12; pectoral rays 22 or 23 (rarely 24); lateral-line scales 20; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 11 (rarely 12); greatest body depth 1.8-2.0 in standard length. Light brown to grey-brown, with blackish scale outlines, head often with violaceous markings; taill fin, rear part of dorsal and anal fins, pelvic fins, and pectoral fins yellowish; juveniles bright yellow with broad blue area on back and upper part of head, also has black ocellated spot at soft dorsal junction. Size: attains 15 cm. Inhabits rocky shores. Depth: 1-38 m. The central Gulf of California to northern Peru, also the Revillagigedos, Cocos and the Galapagos. Attributes Abundance: Common.
