Dorsal rays X or XI + II or III,20-23; anal rays II,9 (rarely 8 or 10); pectoral rays 17-20; pored lateral-line scales 47-50; first gill arch with dark branch, 28-36 rakers; head cavernous and spongy to touch; head concave over eyes; eye 45-59% of top jaw; snout blunt, not projecting beyond upper jaw; mouth terminal, oblique,angled at 30 degrees; lower jaw without barbels, but tip of chin with 4 pores and a small bony knob; eye 4.4-4.8 in head length; teeth in villiform bands, those in outer row of upper jaw enlarged; margin of preopercle with 4-10 radiating spines or serrae, those at angle usually enlarged but not directed downward; pelvic fins with a short filament; tail margin with a long central point .

Color silvery, bluish grey on upper back; dusky spotting and faint blackish stripes following scale rows; head dusky; spinous dorsal fin dusky with blackish tip, remaining fins slightly dusky; a black line inside front teeth of lower jaw.

Size: to at least 19 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters.

Depth: 1-30 m.

Central Mexico (about Puerto Vallarta) to Peru.
