Body oblong, compressed; top of head wide, cavernous, translucent, spongy to touch; wide between eyes; mouth large, below, ends just behind eye; chin without barbels, with 6 pores; angle of preoperculum with 2 strong spines; deep notch between spiny and soft parts of dorsal; 41-45 long, thin rakers on first gill arch; dorsal XII-XIII,22-26, 1st and 2 spines strong; anal II spines, 2nd thick, ~long as 1st ray, 8-9 rays; pectorals long, pointed, reach past anal origin, 18-20 rays; tail rounded to blunt point; scales rough on nape and body, smooth on breast and head, 45-56 on lateral line; tail and soft dorsal and anal covered with small scales.

Yellow brown, sides with grey lines along scale rows; spiny dorsal and all of pectorals except lowest 2 rays black; soft dorsal, tail and anal dark; scales on sides and back with faint dark streaks; roof of mouth pale; inside surface of gill chamber dotted.

Size: 15 cm.

Habitat: shallow coastal, including lagoons.

Depth: 1-30 m?.

Colombia and Ecuador.
