Body very compressed; top of head wide, cavernous, translucent, very spongy to touch; wide between eyes; snout short; eye obliquely elongate; mouth at front, large, very oblique; chin with 4 pores, tip with distinct ridge, without barbels; angle of preoperculum with 2 sharp spines; deep notch between spiny and soft parts of dorsal; 50-57 large rakers on first gill arch; dorsal XI-XIII, 20-22; anal II, 10-11, 2nd spine slender, ~2/3 length of first ray; pectoral fin long, reaches past anus; scales between first part of dorsal fin and lateral line rough; lateral line with 45-48 small scales with tiny accessory scales; 5 rows scales between lateral line and dorsal origin; soft dorsal and anal scaly.
Uniform silver grey, darker above; roof of mouth pale; upper surface of gill chamber dotted; tip of spiny dorsal dark; pelvics and anal yellowish.
Size: 15 cm.
Habitat: coastal bays, on mud and sand bottoms.
Depth: 1-30 m?.
Ecuador to northern Peru.
