Overview
Main identification features
  • head deep, firm;mouth: large, oblique

Deep bodied, head deep, triangular; top of head wide, arched between eyes, cavernous, translucent, firm to touch; eye moderate (~21% of head length); chin with 4 pores, and a small knob; mouth large (reaches almost to rear of eye), slightly overhung by snout, oblique; preopercle with 2 strong, slender spines; gill rakers long & slender, 36-38 on 1st arch; dorsal fin XII-XIII, 21-24; anal fin 9 rays, straight rear edge, 2nd spine long & strong (50-60% of head length); tail bluntly pointed to slightly rounded, ~3/4 of head length; pectoral reaches anus level; pelvic without filament; scales large, rough on body, smooth on head and between lateral line and dorsal fin; all fins heavily scaled with small, elongate smooth scales, median fins with scale sheath at base; 48-50 lateral line scales.

Preserved fish: Body uniform yellowish-silver, nape and top of back finely stippled with brown, larger dots on sides; dark blotch at upper corner of opercle; lower half of eye with dark rim; top of front 1/3 of top lip dark; inside mouth & tongue pale; tip of spiny dorsal dark, of soft dorsal less dark; tail dusky, anal pale; lining of gut cavity silver.

Size: 17 cm.

Habitat: mud and sand bottom.

Depth: 3- 15 m.

Known from Nayarit to Guerrero, central Mexico.
