Head low, broad, flat between eyes, top cavernous, translucent, firm to touch; snout long, slightly projecting; chin with 4 pores, without barbels, without knob at tip; mouth slightly oblique, ends between pupil and rear of eye; angle of preoperculum with 2 strong spines, lower larger, angled down, straight, or curved with tip straight down; eye small (~17-19% of head length); 36-41 short, slender rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal XI-XIII, 21-25, deep notch between spiny & soft parts; anal 9 (rarely 8 or 10) rays, straight edge, 2nd spine long, slender; scales on most of body rough, smooth on head & nape; pelvic with long filament; soft dorsal, anal, pectorals, pelvics covered with small smooth scales; 7-8 scale rows between lateral line & origin of dorsal fin, 47-50 rows on lateral line.

Preserved fish: body brassy silver, browner above; upper 1/2 of inside base of pectoral with conspicuous dark blotch; fins pale, with dusky margin to dorsal; rear 3/4 of roof of mouth black, tongue and floor pale; pelvic filament whitish, lining of body cavity silver.

Size: 21 cm.

Habitat: benthic on mud and sand bottoms.

Depth: 3-20 m.

Eastern Gulf of California.
