Overview
Main identification features
  • head: spongy;eye large
  • c: long point
  • very short snout;mouth at front
  • preopercle: 1 strong spine
Dorsal rays IX or X+II or III,17-20; anal rays II,10 (rarely 9 or 11); pectoral rays 17-19; pored lateral-line scales 48-50; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 18-20, total rakers on first arch 29-30; top of head extremely cavernous and spongy to touch; snout very short and blunt, not projecting beyond upper jaw; mouth terminal, oblique; chin without barbels, with 4 pores; eye very large, 3.3-3.4 in head length; teeth in narrow bands, none notably enlarged; margin of preopercle with a single strong spine at angle; margin of tail fin a long central point.

Color silvery or silvery grey; fins greyish to whitish.

Size: grows to at least 20 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters.

Depth: 1-30 m.

El Salvador to Ecuador.
