Stewartia malacodendron
is uncommon and of conservation concern in some portions of its range. It is available through the horticultural trade. It is most easily distinguished from
S. ovata
by the petiole wings not enclosing the winter buds, much smaller bracts, different fruit shape, and lustrous seeds. Due to incorrectly identified herbarium specimens, some online databases show a much broader distribution for the species.
