Body elongate, pointed at tail end, highly compressed; eyes small, close together, on left side; well developed cover over pupils; front nostril on blind side a bump; snout rounded; mouth small, arched (strongly on blind side), at front or a little under snout; lower jaw without fleshy crest on eye-side; preopercle covered with skin; no lateral line; dorsal origin ~above upper eye; dorsal 94-102 rays; anal 77-83 rays; no pectoral; only left pelvic present, separate from anal; dorsal and anal fused to tail; tail 12 rays; scales rough, on both sides; rays of dorsal and anal ~entirely with rough scales on blind-side; 97-100 lateral scales.
Top side pale brown, series of ~9 incomplete diffuse dark bars, best developed at sides of body; dorsal and anal pale at front, gradually shading to very dark at rear; inside operculum and lining of gut cavity without pigment.
Size: 21 cm.
Habitat: sand and mud bottoms.
Depth: 3-305 m.
California to southern Baja and the SW and E Gulf of California.
