Click on images to enlarge. © Copyright Ross Robertson, 2006 · 12 Symphurus elongatus © Copyright Ross Robertson, 2006 · 12 Symphurus elongatus 3 thumbnails  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features body slender; eyes very small body and fins uniform tan mouth ends behind eye lower jaw: fleshy crest Body very elongate, pointed at tail end, highly compressed; eyes tiny, very close together, without cover over pupils, on left side; snout rounded; mouth small, arched (strongly on blind side), at front or a little under snout; eye-side lower jaw with large fleshy crest, mouth reaches past eye; preopercle covered with skin; dorsal origin ~above upper eye, 99-107 dorsal rays; 83-90 anal rays; 12 tail rays; no pectoral; only left pelvic present, separate from anal; dorsal and anal fused to tail; scales rough, on both sides; no lateral line. Top side pale to dark brown; blind side white; fins clear. Size: 17 cm. Habitat: sand and mud bottoms, including estuaries. Depth: 1-100 m. Sinaloa (Mexico) to Ecuador. Attributes Abundance: Common. Climate Zone: Northern Tropical (Mexican Province to Nicaragua + Revillagigedos); Equatorial (Costa Rica to Ecuador + Galapagos, Clipperton, Cocos, Malpelo); South Temperate (Peruvian Province ).
