Body elongate, pointed at tail end, highly compressed; eyes small, close together, on left side, without covers over pupils; snout rounded; mouth small, arched (strongly on blind side), at front or a little under snout; preopercle covered with skin; dorsal origin ~above upper eye, 80-89 dorsal rays; 63-74 anal rays; 12 tail rays; no pectoral; only left pelvic present, separate from anal; dorsal and anal fused to tail; scales rough, on both sides; no lateral line.

Top side yellowish-brown to dark brown; a series of incomplete diffuse cross bars, strongest at body edges; dark blotch behind operculum; dorsal and anal fins with single dark rays alternating with several clear rays; black dot at base of each dorsal and anal fin rays on blind side; lining of gut cavity black, visible trough body wall.

Size: 9 cm.

Habitat: sand and mud bottoms.

Depth: 20-120 m.

Gulf of California to Ecuador.
