Overview
Main identification features
  • 3-7 incomplete bars
  • dorsal fin and a: blotches - anterior dark, posterior black
  • c: black base, rest clear
  • large eyes
  • dark patch over gut
Body elongate, pointed at tail end, highly compressed; eyes relatively large, without covers over pupils, close together, on left side; snout rounded; mouth small, arched (strongly on blind side), at front or a little under snout; preopercle covered with skin; no pectoral; only left pelvic present, separate from anal; dorsal and anal fused to tail; scales rough, on both sides; no lateral line; dorsal origin ~above upper eye, 85-97 dorsal rays; 71-83 anal rays; 12 tail rays; 86-96 lateral scales.

Top side yellowish to dark brown; body with 3-7 incomplete dark bars; dark blotch behind operculum; rear 2/3 of dorsal and entire anal with 8-13 rectangular blackish spots alternating with clear areas; tail fin with black base, outer 3/4 clear; lining of gut cavity black, visible through side.

Size: 16 cm.

Habitat: sand and mud bottoms.

Depth: 80-300 m.

Gulf of California to Peru.
