Dorsal rays 26-33; anal fin 2-4; pectoral rays 10-14; body rings 14-16+ 34-39; upper longitudinal ridge on trunk and tail discontinuous; upper body and tail rings not continuous, lower trunk and tail ridges continuous; middle trunk ridge ends near anal ring; head length 7.1-10.1 in standard length; snout long (2.0-2.8 in head length); male brood pouch under tail; body without skin flaps; tail fin large; operculum without ridges.

Generally greenish to red-brown, frequently with dark midlateral stripe and/or series of dark bars on side.

Reaches maximum size of 19 cm.

Usually among vegetation (or buried in sand at low tide) in bays and estuaries, occasionally among floating Sargassum.

Depth: 0-20 m.

Southern California to the Gulf of California to Peru.
