Identification
Extracted from: Timberlake P.H., (1969). A Contribution to the Systematics of North America Species of Synhalonia (Hymenoptera, Apoidea). University of California Publications in Entomology Volume 57

This species is similar to lepida in many ways, but the male has the middle legs normal and very distinctive terminalia. The female of both species has on the abdomen, four even white bands which continue across the venter in lepida but not in conformis.

Male.—Black; small joints of tarsi dull ferruginous; tibial spurs testaceous. Labrum and clypeus yellow; clypeal mark much broader than high, nearly squarely emarginate on each side, and reaching close to margin of eyes. Tegulae amber. Wings subhyaline, nervures dark ferruginous, subcosta black. Pubescence moderately dense; pale ochreous, but white beneath, on face and base of abdomen. Hair of tergite 1 long and erect, that on tergite 2 short, erect, whitish, but changing to appressed, feathered condition in apical depression on each side. Ter-gites 3 to 6 each with complete band of appressed white hair in apical depression and short, erect black hair on disk, except that on tergite 3 this hair is white broadly across middle of disk. Hair of tergite 7 ferruginous brown. Hair of venter mostly white and long especially laterally but short and brownish across middle of apical margin of sternites 4 and 5. Hair of legs whitish, becoming bright ferruginous on inner side of tarsi.

Head much wider than long; inner orbits divergent above. Vertex moderately impressed on each side; lateral ocelli their distance apart from nearest eye. Antennae slender, but strongly compressed, reaching apex of tergite 2; joint 3 about one-fourth as long as 4. Legs normal. Second submarginal cell receiving recurrent nervure about one-fourth of its length from apex. Clypeus with fine, close, shallow punctures. Mesoscutum dullish, densely and finely punctured, but posterior middle of disk shining and with well-separated punctures. Apical margin of tergites 1 to 5 more or less narrowly bare and shining. Sternite 6 with small, shining, longitudinal impression on each side of base, terminating in slight marginal bulge, margins converging to moderately wide, rounded apex, with rather dense, coarse, ferruginous hair; disk with low, rounded ridges convergent toward apex, and base with usual very short, fine, erect hair. Sternites 7 and 8 as figured. Parameral lobes of genital armature slender, except for broadened base, apex only slightly broadened, then tapering on inturned, subacute tip. Length about 11.5 mm, anterior wing 8 mm.

Female.—Black; small joints of tarsi ferruginous. Tegulae and wings as in male. Pubescence of thorax moderately bright fulvo-ochraceous above and paler beneath, on face, and tergite 1. Apical bands of tergites 2 to 5 white, occupying but little more than apical depressions and contrasting with black hair on basal half of each segment, that on tergite 2 narrowly receding from apical margin across middle of segment and that on tergite 3 only slightly receding. Long hairs overriding apical depression of segments almost white. Apical band on tergite 5 changing to brown on apical half of the middle part. Hair on each side of pygidial plate dark seal brown, becoming black at apex. Hair of venter black except far to each side. Hair of legs pale ochreous or whitish, ferruginous on inner side of tarsi, dense hair at apex of hind femora and on apical half of outer side of middle tibiae pale brown.

Head much broader than long; inner orbits of eyes parallel. Vertex slightly impressed on each side; lateral ocelli slightly closer to margins of eyes than their distance apart. Proboscis rather short, galeae moderately shining, very minutely tessellate on outer side. Pygidial plate broad at base, apex moderately wide and rounded. Clypeus densely, subrugosely punctured. Mesoscutum dull, densely punctured, but moderately shining on posterior middle of disk, with punctures slightly separated. Length about 13 mm, anterior wing 9.5 mm, width of abdomen 5.7 mm.
