In lunata the hair of the abdomen is partly very long and erect, especially in the male, and the clypeal mark is widely separated from the eyes although the oculoclypeal space is very narrow. In some specimens the hair on the middle of the mesoscutum has a decided brownish tinge. The name chosen for this species has reference to the crescentic form of the apex of the eighth sternite of the male.

Male.—Black; tibial spurs testaceous; tarsi dark, but claws ferruginous. Labrum except lateral margins and clypeal mark bright yellow; clypeal mark with sloping sides, widely sepa¬rated from margin of eyes, leaving lateral margins of clypeus broadly black. Tegulae dark amber, base fuscous. Wings dusky hyaline, nervures piceous, subcosta black. Pubescence of head and thorax long, erect, thin, and ochreous in general, but paler beneath and becoming more or less brownish or fuscous broadly across middle of mesonotum. Hair of tergite 1 whitish, very long, and erect; that of tergite 2 much shorter, but still unusually long, erect, and whitish but becoming black on apical depression. Hair of following segments long, erect, and black, but with some much longer light hair on lateral margins of tergites 5 and 6, and thin bands of shorter whitish pubescence across middle of segment. Hair of tergite 7 entirely very short and black. Hair of venter thin, long, and whitish on sternites 1 and 2 and each side of following segment, becoming shorter and thinner across middle of apex of sternite 4 and short, thin, and brownish on middle of sternite 5. Hair of legs whitish, long, and thin on hind tibiae and basitarsi, and pale ferruginous on inner side of basitarsi.

Head much broader than long; inner orbits of eyes slightly divergent above. Vertex moderately impressed between ocelli and eyes; lateral ocelli their distance apart from nearest eye and their own diameter from occipital margin. Proboscis moderately long; galeae shining and hairless. Oculoclypeal space very narrow. Antennae reaching apex of tergite 2, strongly compressed, joint 3 on short side one-third as long as joint 4. Legs normal, middle tibiae slightly longer than basitarsi. Second submarginal cell receiving recurrent nervure less than one-fourth, and some¬times much less than one-fourth, its length from apex. Clypeus moderately shining, with close small punctures. Frons, vertex, and mesonotum opaque and obscurely punctured. Abdomen moderately shining, and very minutely and closely punctured. Apical margin of tergites 1 to 5 very narrowly impunctate and hairless. Sternite 6 shining, with very weak, elbowed ridge on each side; anterior arm of ridges longitudinal and forming inner boundary of small, shallow, lateral impressions, with hardly evident marginal lobes; disk virtually hairless except for two patches of very short, erect hair at base. Sternites 7 and 8 as figured; points of lunate apex of sternite 8 strongly curved downward. Parameral lobes of genital armature with base very broad, and the slightly expanded apex longer than wide and bent outward in a broad curve; vestiture short, erect, and restricted mostly to basal expansion. Length about 11-14 mm, anterior wing 8.5-10 mm.

Female.—Black; antennae and tarsi dark, but claws ferruginous and tibial spurs testaceous. Tegulae and wings as in male. Pubescence rather short, erect, and moderately dense, not con¬cealing surface, pale ochreous or whitish, but more ochreous on notum, sometimes becoming dis¬tinctly brownish, or even fuscous, on middle of disk of mesoscutum. Hair of tergite 1 whitish, moderately long and erect. Tergites 2 to 5 each with broad white band and with numerous over¬hanging long black hairs, especially on tergites 3 to 5. Hair of tergite 2 very short, erect, and white, with band of black at base often concealed, and that on apical depression mostly black except far to each side. Base of tergites 3 to 5 broadly banded with short, dense black hair. Hair of white bands on tergites 3 and 4 feathered and appressed on apical depression, short, erect, and tomentose on elevated part" of disk, the bands followed by appressed black hair across middle of apical depression of tergite 3 and by a few black hairs at middle of tergite 4. Band on tergite 5 angularly widened at middle, changing to brown or fuscous on the apical half except for outer third on each side. Hair on each side of pygidial plate reddish brown or black. Hair of venter light, becoming brown across apex of sternite 5. Hair of legs pale ochreous or whitish, but seal brown on outer side of middle tibiae and apex of hind femora, and ferruginous on inner side of basitarsi.

Head much broader than long; vertex only slightly impressed on each side. Lateral ocelli their distance apart from nearest eye and somewhat more than their diameter from occipital margin. Second submarginal cell receiving recurrent nervure near apex, or sometimes almost interstitially. Pygidial plate about as wide at base as long and broadly ogival at apex. Clypeus rather coarsely rugo so-punctate, with little or no formation of longitudinal ridges between punctures. Frons, vertex, and mesonotum dull and obscurely punctured. Abdomen minutely and densely punctured, with apical margin of tergites 1 to 3 only very narrowly impunctate and bare. Length about 13 mm, anterior wing 8.5-9.5 mm, width of abdomen 5.2-5.5 mm.
