Dorsal rays 11; anal rays 12; length of bases of dorsal and anal similar; pectoral reaches pelvic fin origin; lateral-line scales 56-59; 3 rows of scales between lateral line + dorsal fin; body elongate, its depth 7.4-9.7 in standard length; eye small; snout moderately long, not sharply pointed; mouth large, lower jaw without a fleshy knob at its tip; mouth reaching well past eye; dorsal fin origin slightly closer to tip of snout than to adipose fin.

Mottled brown on upper half, white below; a row of whitish spots a long the lateral line.

Size: attains 30 cm.

Occurs on open sandy and muddy bottoms.

Depth: 3-90 m.

Southern Baja to the central Gulf of California to Peru.
