Body deep, highly compressed; head deep; mouth oblique; dorsal fin sail-like, XII spines, second 2-3 highest, 10-11 rays, last ray partly attached to tail; anal III, 5-6; pectoral a large fan, 14-15; scales in form of small, spiny papillae; no spines before eye.
Variously mottled with tan, yellow, cream, red, brown, black.
Size: 10 cm.
Habitat: demersal, sand, rock, coral and algal bottoms.
Depth: 5-135 m.
Indo-Pacific; vagrant in the Galapagos.
