Overview
Main identification features
  • disc: broad oval ; snout round
  • tail: low fold above, large one below, 2 spines
TAENIURA

FANTAIL RAYS, RIBBONTAIL STINGRAYS

Disc circular to oval; teeth small, densely packed like tiles; tail with thick, depressed base, slightly longer than disc; low ridge on top of tail and larger fold on lower side of tail that reaches tail tip; 2 large venomous spines on top of tail.

This is circumtropical genus, except for eastern Atlantic; with 3 species and has one Indo-Pacific representative in our region.
