Overview
Main identification features Head and body compressed; snout pointed; head profile straight, oblique; top jaw bone exposed, large, scaly; mouth at front, strongly oblique; eye large; between eyes flat to concave; dorsal originates over pectoral, low, with large pointed lobe at front; anal low, with longer, pointed front lobe; tail deeply concave, with large, long keel made of fused scales on its base; pectoral low on body, long, reaches past lobe of anal fin; pelvics small, inserted just before pectoral base; scales large, cover body, nape, cheeks, operculum, and top jaw, scaleless areas above and behind eye; dorsal & anal fins scaly; dorsal 30-32 rays; anal 21-23 rays; pectoral 19-22 rays; 9-11 rakers on 1st gill arch; adults without lateral line; juveniles with very long fins.

Black body and fins, white crescent on tail, white on tail keel, pectorals and inner rays of pelvic.

Size: 80 cm.

Habitat: oceanic pelagic.

Depth: 0-400 m.

Pacific and Atlantic; Costa Rica to Peru, the Galapagos, Cocos and Malpelo.
