Dorsal rays 8-9; anal rays 7-8; pectoral rays 21-23; caudal rays 8-9; front nostril with a large flap; upper jaw with 3-4 pairs of trifid incisors at front followed on each side by 1-2 small canines; lower jaw with 3-4 pairs of trifid incisors at front followed on each side by 2-5 small canines; anus a little closer to anal fin origin than to rear margin of disc; 3-5 rows of flattened papillae across front of disc, 4-5 rows across rear of disc, none on center of disc.
Rosy red to grey with 4-5 diffuse dark bars across back; about 5 whitish blotches along dorsal midline, including large one on snout; fins yellowish; no dark blotch above pectoral.
Maximum size, to 5 cm.
Inhabits rocky shallows close to shore.
Depth: 0-7 m.
The tip of Baja, and the central Gulf of California to southern Mexico.
