Overview
Main identification features
  • front nostril: small flap
  • green + thin oblique white bars
  • blotch above pectoral
Dorsal rays 8-9; anal rays 6-7; pectoral rays 17-19; caudal rays 9-10; front nostril with a small flap; upper jaw with 5-7 pairs of trifid incisors at front followed on each side by 2-4 well developed canines; lower jaw with 4-5 pairs of trifid incisors followed on each side by 3-4 well developed canines; anus much closer to anal fin origin than to rear margin of disc; 5-7 rows of flattened papillae across front of disc, 6-8 rows across rear of disc, none on center of disc.

Greenish brown with narrow white bars on sides and across back; also scattered dark spots on back and a large dark blotch above each pectoral fin.

Size: attains 10 cm.

Inhabits rocky intertidal zone, reported to be capable of surviving for two days out of water if kept moist.

Depth: 0-5 m.

Western and northeastern Gulf of California.
