Overview
Main identification features
  • front nostril - small flap
  • back- pale band with 2 ventral extensions
  • dark lines down from eye - 2 forward, 2 rearward
  • no blotch over pectoral
Body relatively slender, elongate, head relatively slender; 8-10 rakers on 2nd & 3rd gill arch; small fleshy swelling at pectoral base; front nostril with small (slightly >nostril diameter) skin flap; 4 pairs of upper & 3 pairs of lower 3-pointed incisors, followed by 1-2 & 1 large canines, respectively, on each side; pectoral 20-21 rays; sucker with broad patch of papillae at front, no papillae in center, 5-7 rows of papillae across rear, papillae on inner row of front section at least twice as long as others; anus closer to anal fin origin than sucker; dorsal 6-8 rays; anal 5-8 rays; tail 7-8 rays.

Upper head & body pale grey with scattered white speckles; several wiggly transverse dark lines across top of head behind eyes; sides of head pale grey; 4 thin bars from eye - 2 below and 2 behind; an irregular white band along back at eye level, with 2 wide extensions down onto flank behind of pectoral; midflank with an irregular dark stripe plus blotches; dorsal with a dark margin; inner 2/3 of tail fin dark; no dark spot on flank above pectoral fin.

Size: 2.6 cm.

Habitat: intertidal rock pools and subtidal boulders.

Depth: 0-7 m.

Central Gulf of California to Colombia.
