Overview
Main identification features
  • snout very short, rounded
  • elongate oval
Snout rounded, body relatively slender; lateral line straight; dorsal rays VI + I, 24-27; anal rays II + I, 21-25; gill rakers on first arch (excluding rudiments) 2-6 + 8-10; lateral line nearly straight; no scutes.

Generally silvery, greenish or bluish on upper back and white on belly; without black mark on inner pectoral base.

Maximum size to at least 51 cm, common to 30 cm.

Habitat: demersal on sandy bottoms.

Depth: 0-25 m.

Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru, and the Galapagos and Malpelo.
