Overview
Main identification features
  • diamond shape
  • 4-6 thin bars; fins yellow
  • dorsal and anal finsfilamentous
Easily distinguished by its diamond shaped body, and prolonged second dorsal, anal and tail fin lobes; dorsal rays VI+I,19-21; anal rays II+I,18-20; gill rakers on first arch (excluding rudiments) 8-11 + 13-15; lateral line slightly arched anteriorly; no scutes.

Silvery with 4-6 yellowish to brown bars; fins yellow to reddish.

Grows to at least 61 cm.

Pelagic; often common around rocky offshore islets where it is seen close to the surface.

Depth: 0-30 m.

Southern California to the lower 2/3 of the Gulf of California to Peru, and Cocos, Galapagos and Malpelo.
