Overview

Dorsal rays V + I, 25-26; anal rays II + I, 24-25; gill rakers on first arch (excluding rudiments) 13-18 + 20-32; lateral line nearly straight; no scutes; distinguished from other members of the genus by its relatively slender oval shape, low dorsal and anal lobes, tiny pelvic fins.

Silvery white sides and belly, with dark margins on the caudal fin; live individuals with a distinctive white bar down the rear of the head.

Attains a maximum length of at least 47 cm, common to 30 cm.

Habitat: pelagic; forms large schools, which churn up the surface while feeding.

Depth: 0-25 m.

Known only from the tropical eastern Pacific; at the oceanic islands and on the coasts of Costa Rica and western Panama.
