FishBase 1 thumbnail  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features strong narrow dark bars;fins spotted elongate pectoral usually present anal fin 43-46 Dorsal rays 58-60; anal rays 43-46; pectoral rays 1-3 (usually a single small ray); blind side of head with fleshy long tentacles; lower lip of eyed side fringed; front nostril on eye-side without ring of cirri; border of operculum on blind side mostly scaled; pectoral fin in ~95% of individuals; no hair-like filaments on scales; body oval, elongate. Generally tan with dark brown bars; scattered rows of spots between bars; median fins with dark brown spots. Size: reaches at least 19 cm. Inhabits flat sand bottoms, frequently captured by trawlers, also enters estuaries. Depth: 0-107 m. The southern tip of Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru, the Galapagos.
