Body moderately elongate; back high, strongly curved at front; lower profile ~straight; head low, broad, conical; snout longer than eye; mouth small, ~horizontal, under projecting snout; 1 short, thick barbel on chin; teeth in bands on each jaw, outer row on top jaw larger; preopercle finely serrated; first dorsal fin with short base, X slender spines; 2nd dorsal long base, 24-26 rays; pectoral short, 15-17 rays; anal small, 2 spines, 2nd spine thick, as long as 1st ray, 6 rays; tail with straight edge; lateral line scales 46-50.
Silver; inside gill cover pale; body with distinct, undulating oblique dark lines along scale rows; fins grey; anal and pelvics pale yellowish.
Size: 35 cm.
Habitat: demersal, inshore, bays, surfline; sandy bottoms.
Depth: 1-50 m.
The tip of Baja and the SW Gulf of California to Ecuador.
