Dorsal rays X + I, 26-30; anal rays II, 6-7, 2nd spine thick, 3/4 length of 1st ray; pectoral rays 16-19; pored lateral-line scales 50-53; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 11-14, total 14-16; snout blunt, projecting beyond upper jaw; mouth inferior, more or less horizontal; tip of chin with a single, thick barbel; teeth in villiform bands, those in outer row of upper jaw somewhat enlarged; margin of preopercle very finely serrate; tail margin straight to slightly concave, the upper rays elongated.
Color silvery grey, yellowish below; faint oblique dark lines following scale rows; fins pale to slightly dusky.
Size: to at least 45 cm.
Inhabits sandy bays.
Depth: 1-20 m.
