Body elongate; back high, strongly arched; lower body profile straight; head low, broad, conical; mouth ~horizontal, under projecting snout; snout longer than eye; 1 short, thick barbel on chin; teeth in bands on each jaw, outer row on top jaw larger; preopercle finely serrated; 14-23 rakers on first gill arch; dorsal XI spines, 23-28 rays; anal 2 spines, 5-6 rays, 2nd spine thick, ~1/2 length of 1st ray; pectorals short 15-18 rays; tail straight or weakly rounded; 48-51 lateral line scales; soft dorsal and anal scaly on inner 1/4.

Upper body tan to golden brown, belly silver white; sides with dark distinct oblique lines on scale rows; gill chamber pale, or little dotted; dorsal, tail, anal, and pelvics dusky to dark; pectorals pale; juveniles with ~8-11 faint bars.

Size: 35 cm.

Habitat: coastal, soft bottoms.

Depth: 1-15 m?.

Southern Baja to the southern Gulf of California.
