Dorsal rays X + I, 26-30; anal rays II, 6-7; pectoral rays 16-19; pored lateral-line scales 45-51; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 12-13, total 16-21; snout blunt, projecting beyond upper jaw; mouth inferior, more or less horizontal; tip of chin with a single, thick barbel; teeth in villiform bands, those in outer row of upper jaw slightly enlarged; margin of preopercle very finely serrate; second anal spine slender, 3/4 length of 1st ray; tail margin straight to concave.

Color silvery, greenish brown on upper back; dark lines following scale rows on back and sides; dorsal and caudal fins dusky, pectorals, pelvics and anal fin yellow; inner lining of gill cover intensely black.

Size: grows to about 46.5 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters.

Depth: 1-35 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru, and Cocos.

Body oblong, compressed, and moderately deep, with an arched dorsal profile; snout prominent; mouth small and inferior; lower jaw enclosed by upper; chin with a stiff barbel; edge of preopercle serrate; second dorsal fin short, with 20 soft rays; pectoral fins with 19 rays; first pelvic ray prolonged; body uniformly dark and silvery; flanks without stripes; fins dark; first pelvic ray white (Ref. 55763 ).
