Disc rounded, slightly broader than long; snout somewhat angular; tail equal to or less than one-half of total length; tooth rows in upper jaw 26-35; tail fin rounded.
Generally light brown or tan, normall with dense darker brown spotting and vermiculations; central portion of disc usually with large brown circular markings superimposed on spotted or vermiculated background.
Size: grows to 56 cm (disc width 31 cm).
Habitat: frequently sighted on sand, rubble, or rock bottoms in the vicinity of reefs; often completely or partially covers its back with sand when resting on the bottom.
Depth: 1-90 m.
Northern California to the Gulf of California to Ecuador, and Cocos.
