Click on image to enlarge. © Copyright Photographer/SFTEP, 2002 · 0 Urobatis tumbesensis 2 thumbnails  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features row thorns - disc and tail top: bright, wiggly lines and spots Disc slightly wider than long; disc, tail and top of tail fin uniformly covered with denticles that have star-shaped bases; a series of thorns on star-shaped bases along midline of disc and tail; underside smooth; tail length is ~85% of disc length; no sheath on top of tail for housing tail spine. Top surface and tail fin covered with a bright pattern of coarse light brown and dark wriggly lines and eye-sized spots; lower surface pale with a reticulated pattern of pale spots on a dark background around the sides and rear of the disc, and pelvic fins. Size: reaches at least 41 cm. Habitat: lives on muddy bottoms. Collected in <20 m depth. Central Ecuador to northern Peru. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed.
