Dorsal and anal fins mainly absent, developed only as skin- covered ridge at tip of tail; head and body shorter than tail; posterior nostril not tubular, only with a raised rim above eye; a single minute branchial pore in front of gill opening; teeth pointed and well developed; teeth of jaws biserial, those of vomer uniserial.
Overall brown, usually with mottled pattern evident; tip of tail white to yellowish.
Size: reaches 47 cm.
Habitat: rocky and coral reefs.
Depth: 1-15 m.
Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and Japan to the eastern Pacific; in our region known from southern Baja California and central part of the Gulf of California to Peru, plus the Revillagigedos, Clipperton, Isla del Coco, and the Galapagos.
