Dorsal and anal fins mainly absent, developed only as skin- covered ridge at tip of tail; posterior nostril a short tube above eye; a pair of minute pores in front of gill opening; teeth pointed and well developed; teeth of jaws in 2 rows, 1 row on front roof of mouth.
Uniform brown or golden brown, sometimes with irregular whitish blotches on body.
Size: largest specimen, 56 cm.
Habitat: rocky bottoms.
Depth: ranges from tide pools to a depth of 40 m.
The tip of Baja California, and Central Mexico to Colombia, and the Revillagigedos, Clipperton, Cocos and the Galapagos.
