Overview
Main identification features

Blotched roundray, Chilean roundray, Thorny roundray

Disc elongate oval; pectorals continuous around head; eyes larger than 1/3 distance between them; tail slender; 1 large venomous spine on tail; no dorsal fins; tail length greater than disc length; tail fin elongate oval, upper and lower lobes not confluent; denticles scattered (sparsely or densely) over disc entire, patches between eyes, sides below eyes, along back and top and sides of tail; thorns and denticles different shapes - thorns keel-like with oval bases, denticles curved; 1 irregular row of thorns on midback and tail (sometimes midback only, or on shoulder and tail only); tail fin slender height ~4.1% of total length.

Upper surface grey, grey-brown or tan, with scattered irregular dark grey to blackish spots; lower surface yellowish-white with brown border.

Size: 42 cm (26 cm wide).

Habitat: shallow coastal sandy bottoms.

Depth: 1-60 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Chile.

Egg Type: Live birth; No pelagic larva; No pelagic phase.
