Elongate, compressed; head compressed, conical; eyes large, round, not vertical ovals; chin with 2 pairs of pores; mouth short, oblique, lower jaw projecting; tail shallowly forked; head relatively deep (depth =32% of standard length), strongly compressed; between eyes broad, convex; 22-25 rakers on first gill arch; dorsal XII,17-18, longest spine not reaching second dorsal, spiny and soft parts almost separated; anal III,17-18, spines small; pectoral short, 15-16 rays; scales rough, 12-13 rows between lateral line and dorsal origin, 65-70 scales along side.

Grey, 3 broad stripes along midflank and upper back, lowest one expanded into spot on tail base.

Size: 30 cm.

Habitat: sandy bottoms.

Depth: 0-10 m?.

Ecuador and central Peru.
