Overview
Main identification features
  • initial phase : pale brown + white belly and throat
  • terminal phase : blue lines - head and scales, tail fin base - black spot
Head profile very steep, curved, with fleshy keel at front; head large (head depth ~83% head length, head length 25% of total length); eye on upper 1/2 of head; body depth 23% of total length; jaws without rear canine teeth; head scaleless except for few scales below eye; dorsal fin IX,11, origin over middle of operculum, height of fin gradually increasing to middle of soft part; anal III,10, origin under last dorsal spine, ~uniform height; pectoral reaches to line through anus; pelvic strongly pointed, with first ray elongate; tail slightly convex; lateral line in 2 sections with 19 + 5 pored scales; male with steeper head profile and deeper body than female.

Female uniform pale brown. Male darker brown, with a narrow blue and violet vertical line on each scale, most distinct and broadest on tail base; a conspicuous black spot (larger than eye) at base of tail just above lateral line; three concentric blue lines on outer part of operculum, three narrow blue lines running down and forward from eye across cheek; lower jaw and lower side of head with blue stripes and lines, the one connecting angles of mouth broader than the others, fins pale.

Size: 15.9 cm.

Habitat: benthic on fine sand.

Depth: 5-27 m.

Central Gulf of California to central Mexico.
